Café U-FOLD – Problem gambling

U-FOLD – Forum for research on addiction to medical products and illegal drugs – is part of the disciplinary domain of Medicine and pharmacy at the University of Uppsala. U-FOLD organizes the seminar series Café U-FOLD, which is dedicated to presentations and discussions about various topics relating to addiction.

The topic for the latest seminar (September 12) was problem gambling. Fred Nyberg, professor in Biological research on drug dependence, talked about how the brain’s reward system can be hijacked by gambling. Anders Tengström from Karolinska Institutet presented results from the latest Swedish prevalence study on problem gambling and told about treatment of problem gambling in Sweden. I outlined why people gamble and how leisure gambling can turn into problem gambling (based on my recent article “Why people gamble”).

The evening continued with a lively discussion including all who attended the seminar. A very good initiative by U-FOLD that should inspire to similar public seminars about gambling at other universities.
